* Do you know what the CNAME record is?

Suggested article from our blog: What is a CNAME record?

The CNAME record is a very often used type of DNS record. It points one domain name to the canonical domain name.

Example for DNS CNAME record

The CNAME record is made to be used for subdomains. It can point one subdomain to another subdomain or domain. If a subdomain has a CNAME record, it will not contain any other DNS record.

CNAME records are most commonly used for:

  • Point subdomain that you use for services (like FTP) to the root domain.
  • You can use it to point local domains that you have (.es, .mx, .de, etc.) to the main .com domain.

Last note, CNAME can’t be added, if there are already other DNS records for the hostname.
